A government nod can move a small cap quickly. Ocean Power Technologies (NYSE American: OPTT) said on July 17 that its maritime drone technology has been selected by the U.S. Government for further engagement following a recent competitive capability assessment.
New Jersey-based OPT develops autonomous maritime systems, including its WAM-V unmanned surface vehicles, and the company said this selection represents another step in its ongoing engagement with the U.S. Government and validates its continued investment in autonomous maritime capabilities. With defense and security customers paying increasing attention to uncrewed maritime systems, emerging from a competitive government evaluation strengthens OPT's positioning for future technical engagement and, in the company's words, reinforces the growing relevance of its USV platform to U.S. defense and security customers. For a company of OPT's size, sustained traction with government evaluators is the kind of pipeline-building milestone investors watch closely.
By the company's own admission, however, the selection is not a contract award and provides no assurance of additional government work or future business. This is market commentary, not investment advice — small-cap technology stocks are highly speculative and you can lose your entire investment.
